We've had some excitement in our house over the weekend. On Sunday, Haley began showing signs that her hydrocephalus was beginning to rear its ugly head. She was relatively listless all weekend, she began vomitting her formula, her eyes became downcast (meaning she couldn't open them very wide and they always looked like they were looking down at her nose), and late Sunday, a bulge in the upper center of her forehead began to appear. We weren't surprised by any of this since we educated ourselves on what to look for, but we had hoped to make it to our appointment with the neurologist/neurosurgeon at the end of the month.
As it stands now, Haley will be admitted to Children's at 1 pm today, and will undergo surgery to place a shunt to allow the fluid to drain from her brain. The surgery will take about an hour, and barring complications, she should be home by Wednesday. Then it's touch and go for a couple of weeks while we see if her body accepts the shunt. This is all happening early enough that, again barring complications, she should be able to get back on track.
