As many of you know, Kelsee and I were approved in early July to be adoptive
parents. Well, surprisingly, we were notified a couple of weeks ago that
we've been matched with a birth family in Idaho. However, the adoption is
still tentative. What that means is we are the selected family to receive
the child, but the birth mother is still hesitant about placing the child up
for adoption. This is common with adoption, since giving up your child is a
difficult decision. The birth family can change their mind at any point
along the way until a couple of days after birth. So the chances we will
actually get the child are about 50/50 all the way until the end.
Needless to say, we're excited, but it's a guarded excitement.
The baby (we're not 100% sure, but we think it's a girl) is expected to be
delivered by c-section on September 27. This is because the baby has been
diagnosed in utero with Dandy-Walker syndrome. Basically, DWS is an illness
where the brain doesn't quite develop as it should, and fluid is gathering
in the brain (this is called hydrocephalus or "water on the brain"). The
child will potentially be born with problems, though the extent varies
dramatically (from minor developmental delays to severe disabilities). The
baby will have an operation within 24 hours of birth to have a shunt placed
to help the fluid drain. This often times help eliminate major issues. For
more info on the illness, go here:

We'll be talking with the birth mother for the first time on Friday via a conference
call. We'll update with more info then.
